Coach Hugo featured by World Athletics
A recent article on the World Athletics website about the development of elite runners in India heavily features Kenya Experience Head Coach Hugo van den Broek. World Athletics are the global governing body (formerly known as IAAF) and they have highlighted the work Coach Hugo has done in India with the Elite Distance Running Programme based out of Bhopal. The program was developed with the lofty goal of helping Indian distance runners to thrive on the world stage and Hugo spearheaded the project as Head Coach.
Between 2014 and 2019 Hugo spent time each year in India with a team of talented youngsters, as well as bringing some of the most promising to train with him in Iten Kenya.
The project has been an overwhelming success with leading athletes Gavit Murli developing from a 33 minute 10k runner to winning silver in the Asian championships over the same distance. As well as under 20 athlete Ankita Dhyani qualifying to compete in the upcoming World Junior Championships in Nairobi.
Hugo said:
“I’m very grateful that Global Sports Communication and Procam gave me the opportunity to nurture and develop some of India’s most promising young athletes from 15-18years right through to international senior level. I was able to put all my experience and knowledge into this job, whilst at the same time it challenged me a lot as a coach. Providing tailor made training programs for 30different runners was just a small part of the job. Working together with a wider support team, in a foriegn country with different customs than I am used to, asked a lot from my psychological, educational, social and communication skills.
I’ve no doubt I am a better coach going forward because of this experience.”
This experience adds to Hugo’s coaching of local elite athletes in his adopted home nation of Kenya and his own time as an elite marathoner. We are immensely proud of Hugo and what he has achieved in his coaching career so far and are delighted that he continues to lead the coaching program at Kenya Experience.
